Children’s parties
As professional entertainers we attend more
children’s parties than adult functions. This page is aimed at parent's
who are having their first organised party for a child, so information
is aimed at parents of 4 to 5 year olds. When the children involved are
older we obviously treat them so and change the way we approach the
event and hence what we do.
The youngest age group we feel our service is appropriate for is a 4th
Birthday party. At these parties there will inevitably be many 3 year
olds and at that age our experience shows they are still too young to
understand the concepts of a Disco Party, therefore parents must be
prepared to provide the support the children need.
Even at many 5 year old parties it has to be remembered that we as
entertainers are strangers to the children, so for the first 15 minutes
we ask parents to join in with the party. They can then usually retire to
their seats and be “entertained” by both the Dj and the children
themselves.
What do you do at a child's party?
This is always the question I am asked when I receive a telephone call
about our parties.
It depends on what you have booked. Add balloon modelling, or a life
size Character like Minnie Mouse or Peppa Pig to our disco and party
games package
.
Each of our Djs are slightly different in how they approach a party so
these notes are generalisations, and a party can vary wildly even with
similar age groups.
Initially after introducing ourselves, it may be we have the children fetching their parents into a
circle so we can through play learn which is our left and right hand.
This will lead into the Hokey Kokey, linked with musical bumps for the
children, where they can win a prize.
By the 3rd verse the children have usually enough confidence for the
parents to retire “For a well earned break!”.
As the children are in a circle it is an obvious time to play pass the
parcel. (Although we have entered the idea that the game may be kissing
the Boys; or Girls!) (We do not of course play that game.)
After Pass the parcel a dancing competition called “The Clap Clap dance”
and possibly the Locomotion with Parents acting as Magic Tunnels.
Tunnels on occasions catch boys and girls and if the parents know the
child they may get tickled. The Children love this game so we have kept
it in even though it may not be politically correct.
By now the first hour of the party has been done (I have abbreviated
some of the things we do for the sake of reading). So we suggest at this
point it is time for party food.
The second half; usually with about 30 to 45 mins. left of the event;
depending on what parents have arranged as food, the children will start
running around, so we use this indication to bring order and have the
Birthday Cake. It’s funny how many children sing the wrong version, so
we pick “X” factor style some one to sing the correct version.
While clearing up is in progress a dance like The Fast Food Rockers is
appropriate.
The final session is based around a game based on our dragon
Noo Noo.
This involves a Dragon Den’s where parents have been taught to pull
horrible faces by the children, Sweeties as consolation prizes, Dragon
spots and crazy frogs!
Kids get this immediately, but Dragon Keepers and parents with glove
puppets who collect dragon spots need to be taught their role. It is the
section of the party that the parents and children remember and the
reason we get so many repeat bookings.
I haven’t any photos of this game as we are too busy to take them, so
you will have to see the game personally to see how much fun it is.
Finally the “Star” of the party (the birthday person) gives out prizes
to the best Boy, Girl and Parent who are doing YMCA.
