Christenings
After Weddings and 5th birthday parties these are our most requested
events, but are the most difficult events to please our clients.
Most after Christening parties are held on a Sunday
afternoon in pubs or social clubs and are a chance for relatives and
friends to get together and socialise.
Usually it is the babies mother who contacts us and
obviously wants some form of entertainment. As we are children’s party
specialists they call us - Thank you.
Requests for entertainment for Christenings fall
into 3 distinct categories:-
1 We have a lot of children coming and want to keep
them entertained
2 We have a lot of children coming and want to keep
them entertained so we can have a drink
3 We are having a family party and our friends will
be bringing their children. Do you do party games as well as music?
A christening party is not the same as a wedding or
adult birthday party as it is held in an afternoon. Playing music for
dancing very rarely works as most audiences seem to need dark conditions
and alcohol before they will dance so a standard “Disco” approach of
flashing lighting and loud music does not work. (“Auntie Muriel has a
headache will you turn it down”) Approach 1 and 2 does not work!
While there may be a number of children attending
these will vary in age from often 3 months to 10 years old. There are
many party dances that 5 year olds and above like, The Macarana, The Cha
Cha Slide and Superman to name just 3. When we play these, the girls may
join in while boys run round fighting with balloons or just bursting
them, making the younger ones cry. Mums and dads just want the children
to “Go and Dance” but are not prepared to dance with the children, so
often we are on stage doing the actions by our selves.
Also as we are strangers to the children, they do
not always respond to us especially if we are stood above them on a
stage. (we prefer to work on the floor in front of the stage)
If a Christening party is to be successful please
take the following advise as a starting point to work from.
A christening party should be a family celebration
with the children as the focal point of the party.
Advise your guests
that the purpose of the after christening party is to play with their
children and the entertainment has been booked to help do this.
We
are not baby sitters and any child under 5 years old will need to be
shown by parents what to do. The Dj is a
facilitator and parents MUST join
in.
If there are less
than 15 children present playing party games or party dances will not
work!
Think
about having face painter as well as the Dj . Although more expensive
this format is more likly to succeed.
We will be doing the Hokey Cokey, pass the parcel,
musical chairs (or equivalent with large coloured mats/spots on the
floor). Parents will be pulling silly faces and children selecting the
best to be the Dragons Den Keeper and giving out consolation prizes, or
holding cards in the corners of the dance floor for the corner game.
Do not try to make the party too long as children
loose concentration after about 2 hours. Parents also find that after
getting the Children ready, the ceremony then perhaps food and the
entertainment it will have resulted 5 to 6 hours for children in their
best clothes and expected behaviour.
Do not put balloons on the floor they will just be
burst, causing babies and very young children to cry.
You will be asked to provide a pass the parcel with
a unisex prize and a half a dozen prizes for other games, please do not
just provide bags of sweets. (We used to
provide the prizes but parents thought we were too expensive with good
prizes or that we were giving poor prizes out when we reduced our fees.
We now only carry certificates and medals.
